Frequently Asked Questions

What is in a supplemental curriculum?

The ELSS is a supplemental curriculum. It is additional material designed to support a primary curriculum. Primary curriculums can be any curriculum normally approved by insurance to test for client progress. The ELSS is a tool to assist when unsure of how to move forward on the primary curriculum.

When would I use the ELSS?

The supplemental curriculum shown here is to be used in the early stages of intervention to aid in working with a new client; particularly one with very low rates of correct responding.

What research is the ELSS based on?

The ELSS incorporates methods based on research in precision teaching, observing responses, the differential outcomes effect, error correction, desensitization, early child development, and echoic training. The research underlying the ELSS is discussed at length in the book.

Is this a criterion or norm referenced assessment?

The ELSS is criterion referenced. However, age-norm comparisons from multiple developmental studies were used when selecting the target skills and the order of target progression.

How would this be submitted to insurance?

As this is a supplemental assessment only the primary assessment from the main curriculum would need to be submitted. You would submit your regularly planned assessment, and then use this as a supplemental tool when programming. Targets from the ELSS can be added as goals to the pre-authorization as you deem fit.

Is the program hard to learn?

The ELSS is intended to be as easy to implement as possible. Therapists will likely have the greatest trouble with the generalization and attending goals as these are the most unique relative to other curriculums.
